Make it, then try it

  1. Diagram: Cut and crease

    1. Cut and crease

Cut out the whole green shape and the cat head. Keep the two triangles attached. Crease both dashed lines, then open them again.

  2. Diagram: Fold the first triangle

    2. Fold the first triangle

Fold A down onto the square. Its long diagonal edge runs from the top-left to the bottom-right corner. Keep the square underneath flat.

  3. Diagram: Close the pocket

    3. Close the pocket

Put a thin layer of glue on the OUTSIDE of folded A, away from its diagonal edge. Fold B left onto A. Never glue A to the square underneath.

  4. Diagram: Add the cat and mark a page

    4. Add the cat and mark a page

Glue the cat to the outside of the triangle pocket. Keep the diagonal opening clear. Let it dry, then slide a page corner between the pocket and the square back.

Put your cat bookmark to use

This cat corner bookmark template makes a triangular paper pocket with a separate ginger cat face. Once the glue is dry, try the pocket gently on a scrap-paper corner before using it in a book.

  1. Mark tomorrow's starting page

Read a short section together, then slide the pocket over the corner of the page where you will begin next time. Give the cat a name. Before reopening the book the next day, recall one thing that happened in the story.

  2. Choose a favourite passage

Use the bookmark to mark a page you want to share. Explain which picture or sentence you chose and why. When someone else has a turn, move the bookmark to their choice without bending the page.

  3. Make a reading gift

Write the recipient's name on the back before final assembly. Pair the bookmark with a handwritten reading recommendation on separate scrap paper. Keep the note outside the pocket so the page opening stays clear.

Questions before you make it

Is this cat bookmark an origami project?

It is a cut, fold and glue corner bookmark. The supplied pocket has two triangular flaps and a separate cat face. It is not a no-cut, no-glue origami square.

Where do I put glue on the corner bookmark?

Fold the two triangular flaps so they lie over one another, then glue the flaps together as shown. Do not glue them flat to the square back panel. The space between them and the back forms the page pocket.

Why will my bookmark not slide onto a page?

Check that the diagonal pocket opening is not glued shut and that the folds meet cleanly. Test on scrap paper without forcing it. If the opening has been sealed, remake the pocket rather than pulling against a book page.

Can I resize the printable cat bookmark?

Print at 100% / Actual size for the supplied 60 mm pocket base and matching face. Resizing changes the pocket and has not been checked for fit. A4 and US Letter versions already retain the same piece dimensions.

Can I use it on several pages at once?

Begin with one ordinary paper page. This prototype has not been tested for thick pages or stacks of pages. If the pocket feels tight, stop rather than bending the book or forcing the bookmark.
